Europe: more people work in sport, and more people train
According to Eurostat, 1.55 million people worked in sport in the EU in 2023, 1.65 million in 2024 and 1.80 million in 2025. The figure counts everyone in a sport occupation in any sector, plus everyone working in the sport sector.
Europe's gyms had 75.5 million members in 2025 and took €39.1 billion across 67,515 clubs. The largest markets by members are Germany (12.4 million), the United Kingdom (12.2 million) and Spain (7.1 million). Gym members are 9.3 % of Europe's population and 11 % of people over 15.
| Employed in sport, thousand | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU (27) | 1,551.6 | 1,651.5 | 1,797.9 |
| Lithuania | 6.6 | 8.1 | 10.4 |
| Latvia | 4.9 | 4.5 | 5.4 |
| Estonia | 6.8 | 7.2 | 5.2 |
| Sweden | 71.2 | 79.8 | 84.9 |
| Denmark | 37.7 | 42.1 | 40.3 |
| Norway | 32.3 | 35.8 | 30.0 |
Lithuania: many small sport businesses
In 2024 Lithuania had 1,481 enterprises in sport activities (NACE 93.1), including 37 fitness facilities (93.13) and 1,009 “other sports activities” enterprises (93.19), up from 858 in 2023.
Our own reading: “other sports activities” enterprises employed about one person each in 2024. Much of Lithuania's sport services come from very small, often one-person, businesses — and coaches working on an individual activity certificate may not appear in enterprise statistics at all.

What this means for a coach
Our own calculation: a coach who runs 20 personal sessions a week at the average €26 earns about €2,250 a month before tax and costs (20 × €26 × 4.33 weeks). Working in person only, the way to earn more is a higher price or more hours.
That is why more coaches train some clients online: an online client does not take an hour in the gym, and their programme and progress are on their phone. How many clients fit in your week, and what to charge, you can work out with our calculators.

Limitations
- No country publishes a separate count of personal trainers: Eurostat's employment in sport also covers club coaches, instructors, athletes and everyone working in the sport sector.
- Labour Force Survey figures for small countries, Lithuania among them, rest on a small sample and can move between years; Eurostat's series has a break in 2021.
- paslaugos.lt prices reflect the coaches who list their services there, not the whole market.
- This report publishes no data from the 3E COACH platform.
